Most of your Porsche systems depend on electricity. The electrical system is vital, as it proves the power for everything from the headlights to the spark plugs. A problem in the electrical system can be a nuisance, or it can cause damage to your engine. Fortunately, your Porsche dealer can fix any electrical problems for you. These are signs of some of the issues we can repair.
Damaged Ignition Coil
The spark plugs provide the ignition for the combustion that moves your car. The plugs, however, can’t generate enough power to ignite the fuel-air mix. An ignition coil is attached to each spark plug, and it increases the power of the plug. A spark plug provides 12 volts of power, and the ignition coil boosts this to 50,000 volts.
Ignition coils can wear out over time, which reduces the power available to their spark plug. An ignition coil can also be damaged by a worn-out spark plug. If there isn’t a strong enough charge to ignite the fuel-air mix in the cylinders, combustion will be inefficient. You may experience stalling, misfiring, and other engine problems. Our technicians can easily replace damaged ignition coils for you.
Worn Alternator
The alternator is a mini generator that produces your car’s electrical power. An alternator is powered by the turning of the crankshaft, which causes the alternator to spin. A bundle of magnets in the center of the alternator generates magnetic energy through this movement. The energy produced is then captured by the stator and converted into DC by the rectifier.
When an alternator gets older, it will slow down. When the alternator slows down, it will produce less and less electricity. Eventually, the alternator won’t be able to produce enough power for all of your car’s systems. When this happens, your Porsche will experience random electrical issues. These range from a radio that stops and then starts again to dim headlights. We can test your alternator and replace it if it’s worn out.
Damaged Wiring
The electricity produced by the alternator must be transmitted to the devices and components that require it. Electrical wires and cables snake through your engine to carry power to every electrical component. The wiring is protected against damage by plastic and rubber coverings. Wiring, however, can wear out or break.
Broken wiring will cut off power to one or more components. The alternator will still try and supply power, and this will cause the wiring to heat up and even burn. Our technicians can easily test for damaged wiring and repair it.
