Your brake system is one of the most important systems in your vehicle. In today’s Porsches, there is a lot of integrated technology designed to keep you and your passengers safe. However, replacing the components of your brake system in a timely manner when they wear down is one of the best things you can do for your safety. Today, we’re looking at how often you should replace your brake pads at your local car dealer.

How Often Should You Replace Your Brake Pads

Generally, the pads of your brakes should be replaced every 10,000 to 20,000 miles. If you drive a lot, this may feel a little frustrating. Fortunately, you can take solace in knowing that brake rotors tend to last a lot longer.

Individual experiences vary, but you can feel pretty confident that your rotors will last for 50,000 to 70,000 miles. Just keep in mind that your brake rotors are made up of iron and exposure to moisture will accelerate corrosion.

Why Should I Get My Pads Replaced at My Local Car Dealer?

You should let an authorized automobile dealer replace the pads on your brakes due to the quality of the dealership technicians. You can feel confident that the technician replacing the pads on your brakes has been trained to replace your pads safely. A certified Porsche technician will also be able to diagnose any other problems your car may be having, like a loose wheel bearing.

What Are Some of the Most Common Signs That I Need to Replace My Pads?

Vibration When Braking

If your steering wheel vibrates when you apply your brakes, there is a good chance it is time for your pads to be replaced. This vibration could be a sign that one of your pads is more worn than the other pads. However, it is important to come in and see a professional technician about this problem because there is also a chance that one of your rotors is warped.

Grinding When Braking

There is also a very good chance that your pads need to be replaced if you consistently hear a grinding sound every time you apply pressure to your brake pedal. In most modern cars, pads include a metal indicator strip. As the brake pad wears, the metal strip becomes exposed. The metal strip, when exposed, grinds against the other metal that makes up your brake system. If you ignore the grinding sound, you will end up with damage to far more than your old pads.

There is a good chance that it is time to replace the pads on your brakes if it has been 10,000 to 20,000 miles since the last time your pads were changed. However, it may not yet be time for you to replace your brake rotors. Brake rotors usually last for up to 70,000 miles before they need to be replaced.
